Joe Carlsmith is a senior research analyst at Open Philanthropy, where he focuses on existential risk from advanced artificial intelligence. He is the author of “Is Power-seeking AI an Existential Risk?,” an Open Philanthropy report formulating and examining the core argument for existential risk from misaligned AI; and “How Much Computational Power Does It Take to Match the Human Brain?”, an in-depth review of the evidence about the human brain’s computational power. He also writes independently about a wide variety of topics in philosophy and futurism. He has a doctorate in philosophy from Oxford, and B.A. in philosophy from Yale.
